Lentil “Meatballs“

There are a lot of vegan or vegetarian alternatives out there, some of them good, some of them horrible. This was the first time I have ever made “meat“ balls with lentils, and I have to say, they came out pretty good, I served them on top of linguine with a nice arrabiatta sauce. The great thing about this recipe is that it is versatile, you can add and omit ingredients and make it your own version.


1 cup of brown lentils

1 onion

3 cloves of garlic

1 cup of mushrooms

1 egg

1 tablespoon of flour

salt and pepper



Soak the lentils in boiling water for 15 minutes.

In a large pan, fry the onion and mushrooms until they are browned, this can take up to 15 minutes

Add in the garlic and be sure not to burn it

Season as you cook

Once the food has browned, set aside to cool.

When the food has cooled, drain the water from the lentils and mix it with the onions and mushrooms in a separate bowl. Finely chop the parsley and add in

Add in the flour and the egg to help with binding the meatballs

Heat up oil in a large pan

Form little balls, about 5cm in diameter

Fry them in the pan for about 10 minutes, or until they have got a nice sear to them

serve as is, or on top of some delicious pasta
